Who We Are
Mane Stream (formerly Somerset Hills Handicapped Riding Center -SHHRC) is designated as a Premier Accredited Center by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International (PATH-I). Mane Stream's mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with physical, developmental, emotional, and medical challenges through a diverse program of equine-assisted activities, therapy services, and educational initiatives. Mane Stream offers several programs including Adaptive Riding, Therapy Services (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, & Speech Language Pathology), Field Trips, & an All Abilities Summer Day Camp.
What We Do
Mane Stream offers a wide variety of programs serving a wide variety of participants. All of the below programs are conducted with the assistance of specially trained volunteers, 14 years of age or older. These volunteers help to get the horses ready, assist the participant in staying safe on the horse for their program, and then help to put the horse away after the program. Horse experience is a plus, but not required. For more information and to apply to be a Mane Stream volunteer, visit our website here!
Our programs include...
- Adaptive riding is a recreational program designed to teach basic horsemanship and riding skills to individuals with special needs and is offered to children as young as 4 years of age through adults. Lessons at Mane Stream are generally private and are taught by a PATH-I certified or in-training instructor.
- Equine-assisted Therapy Services is a treatment strategy utilized by a licensed physical therapist, occupational therapist, or speech & language therapist using the multi-dimensional movement of the horse to help attain traditional therapy goals. Sessions are conducted by a New Jersey licensed therapist who is also certified by the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA)
- Mane Stream's All Abilities Summer Day Camp is open to Children with disabilities and typically developing children, ages 4 and up. Recently, Mane Stream has also added Adult Weeks open to Adults with special needs as well! Activities are matched to the age of the campers.
