Every year Katie's House collects toys, games and gift cards (no stuffed animals please) to be given to children in the hospital with cancer.  The toys are given out at their holiday party and extras are used during the year for special occasions like birthdays or just to brighten up a bad day. 

Looking for volunteers to help us with some interior painting to update our homes. Grab some friends and let's have some fun while volunteering!

Provide marketing expertise and public relations/publicity for Project Help.  A creative and modern view on how to reach populations who are potential donors, members and fans.

College students are especially welcome.  We are willing to help train.

If you are comfortable around dogs you may be interested in this. We would like to see our dogs go out for at least 1 daily walk. Volunteer orientation required before being able to handle dogs.

Father John's Animal House is looking for a volunteer who has a background in grant writing or researching for grants. FJAH is a no-kill shelter for dog and cats that relies on fundraisers donations and grants to help operate the shelter. We have just

You will establish fundraising events and social events working with the board.

This is a fun and exciting opportunity and if you are brand new at it, you will learn a lot.  Experience people desired and as such, you can become the team leader and possibly move up to a board position.

Meetings are held in Sparta but the corporation is located in Sussex.  All members are based from thier own home.

Help us spread the word about this important work...supporting research that will lead to effective treatments and cures for serious brain diseases and conditions such as: brain cancer, Parkinson's & Alzheimer's diseases, PTSD, autism, strok,e addiction.

All money raised goes to the Summer fellowship program to attract bright motivated students to the field of neuroscience in hopes they will add to the work of the senior scientists towards treatments and cures of serious brain diseases and  disorders such as: Alzheimer's, brain cancer, ALS, addiction, pain, stroke, MS, TBI, etc.

This is a totally volunteer run non-profit. Be part of the team for Brain Health.

Duties range from simple bookkeeping on Quickbooks, to more skilled duties as treasurer.  Keeping track of all money in and out and generating reports monthly.

This effort usually takes only an hour or two a week, usually less in most months.

We would love to have an office space donated.

Research corporations based on provide criteria.  Purpose is to get sponsors for events.  Work can be done at home or local library.

Pathways 2 Prosperity is an exciting initiative to end poverty. It provides the support and resources to families, called Path Leaders, who have made a serious commitment to change their lives by becoming self-reliant and resilient. We meet on Tuesday evenings in Sparta providing a meal and curriculum for both adults and children.  We are looking for individuals interested in preparing and/or serving meals to our participants. You can sign up with other individuals or by yourself.  Join us and become part of an exciting intiative that is creating sustainable change.  All that is required is the desire to make a difference.

Depending on what you like to do and what you are good at, we can fit you to the right committee.

Help bring Ginnie's House into the 21st century by volunteering your technology savvy to assist us with creating a social media presence.  We need a volunteer who knows their way around all aspects of the social media work including:  Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc.

What Do Tutors Do?

A tutor, working through Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County, works with an adult who wants to improve his facility in the use of English, and related skills.  This person might be U.S.-born or foreign born.  The tutoring is done on a confidential basis; no one else needs to be told that this tutoring is taking place.  The tutor and adult learner usually meet at a public place for about two hours once a week.

 The material covered in those sessions varies greatly from student to student, since it depends on the student’s objectives and his current level of English knowledge.  For instance, one objective for an American-born student at one time could be obtaining his driver’s license.  Once that was achieved, he might have a new objective of improved ability to understand written instructions on the job.   For someone born abroad, who had not previously studied English, the first objective probably would be the ability to carry on a basic conversation in English.

How can a tutor handle such varied tasks?  Every prospective tutor receives about 18 hours of training: three-hour sessions once a week for six weeks.  There is a library of training materials available for tutors.  There are people with experience who can assist when the best approach is not clear.  Most tutors are not teachers by profession.  The characteristics most essential to their success are flexibility—to adapt to the student’s level of understanding--- and desire to help the student.

Both the tutor and the student have work to do between lessons.  The tutor will spend several hours each week preparing for a lesson.  The student will be given “homework” –exercises or reading or some other task which will fix more permanently in his mind the concepts covered during the lesson.

All of this is a factual reply to the question, “What does a tutor do?”  Most tutors, if asked, would answer that question quite differently.  For instance:

            --I gave my student the ability to find a better job by helping him to get a

               driver license

            --I helped my student find a better job through his much-improved use of English

            --I made it possible for my (foreign-born) student to communicate with her children’s teachers

            --I helped my student become a U.S. citizen

Tutors are not paid in money. These results are their reward.  Most tutors find their work quite gratifying.
