The goal of the Middle Earth Visions is to prepare youth to enter the workforce and begin a fulfilling career. Along with career readiness training, we also provide our students with an industry recognized credential, as well as a short-term internship in a field that interests them. A crucial part of this process is the mock interview, in which the participant takes part in an interview with a professional in order to practice their interview skills and receive feedback. We are looking for volunteers to serve as mock interviewers, and are accepting professionals from a variety of different careers so that each of our program participants may be able to interview with a career professional that can relate to their interests.

GOTR volunteer coaches do not have to be runners themselves; the only requirement is that they be enthusiastic and committed to the healthy development of girls in grades 3-8. Groups meet twice a week for 75 minutes for 10 weeks. Coaches receive training and are provided detailed lesson plans as well as all the materials and guidance needed to implement GOTR. You just need to bring your energy and enthusiasm.

Opportunities are available in Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Tutoring in a broad range of topics, including SAT and PSAT tutoring, is essential to the success of the YCR program.

Pathways 2 Prosperity is an exciting initiative to end poverty. It provides the support and resources to families, called Path Leaders, who have made a serious commitment to change their lives by becoming self-reliant and resilient. We meet on Tuesday evenings in Sparta providing a meal and curriculum for both adults and children.  We are looking for individuals interested in preparing and/or serving meals to our participants. The STEM Lab Assistants assist students in following procedures, performing calculations, using instrumentation, and offers recommendations to instructor (after students have completed the program) for modifying experimental procedures. Lab Assistants insure safety of the students by monitoring student activities.

Support clients who are building skills needed to live independently; assist with job preparation, credit counseling, budgeting, learning English as a second language, furthering education and resume writing.

SAVE of Essex County is looking to train more volunteer Confidential Sexual Violence Advocates. Advocates work with survivors of sexual assault by accompanying them through medical and legal procedures. 

SAVE will be hosting the next advocate training from September 12 - October 19th. Trainings will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm-9pm. 

Qualifications: 

-At least 21 years old

-Complete 40 hour training 

-Have reliable transportation for accompaniments to hospitals, police stations, and court houses throughout Essex County. 

-Possess good communication skills, dependability, and compassion. 

-Ability to understand and maintain confidentiality

Groups of trained judicial volunteers, appointed by the assignment judge, assist the court in reviewing cases of children placed outside of their homes by the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP). A volunteer is assigned to a CPR Board, consisting of about 5 volunteers, to review these cases.

CPR Boards conduct various reviews of children involved in "voluntary placement" cases. In such cases, DCPP has placed a child out of his or her home pursuant to a voluntary agreement signed by the parent but there is no allegation of abuse or neglect and DCPP has not filed a child abuse or neglect complaint case against the parent. In "litigated" cases, for which DCPP has filed a child abuse or neglect complaint, a CPR Board conducts one review to determine the progress made by DCPP in addressing the child's needs and any potential barriers to finding a safe, permanent home for the child. These litigated cases remain under the direct oversight of a judge.

In all cases, CPR Boards draft case-specific recommendations for the consideration of a judge. At CPR Board meetings, held at designated court facilities on a scheduled basis, the Board may interact with DCPP caseworkers or their supervisors, parents, foster parents, or other child welfare stakeholders.

CPR volunteers complete court-sponsored initial training upon appointment in addition to annual continuing education programs dealing with current child welfare issues, ensuring their meaningful participation in the child placement review process. Integral to the New Jersey Child Placement Advisory Council (CPAC) and its mission is the mandate to advise New Jersey’s three branches of government on the effectiveness of the Child Placement Review Act.  The 2014 CPAC Annual Report Recommendations for 2015 accomplishes this.

CPAC also holds training workshops and events on topics that are appropriate and relevant for CPR board volunteers.  CPAC will be hosting its 2015 Annual Training on May 7 at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick.  More information about this event is available via the Council’s “Save The Date” notice.

A representative from each CPR Board statewide is selected annually to be a member of the New Jersey Child Placement Advisory Council (CPAC).

The Warren County Courthouse is looking for Youth Volunteers (ages 14-18) for the Juvenile Conference Committee.

The Juvenile Conference Committees (JCCs) serve under the authority of the Family Division of Superior Court. A JCC is a six to nine member citizen volunteer panel appointed by the Family Division Judge. In a confidential setting, JCC panels hear and decide matters involving alleged juvenile offenders. The juvenile, parent(s) and or guardian(s) and complainant/victim are invited to discuss the offense and related matters with the Committee. The JCC considers the facts, and makes recommendations to the judge for a resolution that would aid in the juvenile's rehabilitation.

The program is designed to divert juveniles charged with first or second time minor offenses to their local JCC, which acts as a community-based arm of the Family Court. Program volunteers are required to complete mandatory program-specific training.

Your job, to make the morning coffee, greet students and teachers as they arrive in East Hanover for a day at the laborartory. Help us by taking pictures as students perform four science experiments along side corporate volunteers and post them on Facebook. Then it is time for lunch where Volunteers are well feed and food delivered daily for all program days. Your help coordinating this and making sure the day goes smoothly appreciated. Some light paperwork nessesary and computer skills needed. It is a fun and easy day. Volunteers are eligible to join our Volunteer rewards program.

The Stickley Seminar is a free, 6-session training course that prepares potential docents to give tours of The Stickley Museum to the general public and visiting groups. Docents play a vital role in the daily operations of the Stickley Museum, guiding tours and serving as the face of the museum for visitors from around the world. It’s rewarding work that is great for anyone with a curious mind who enjoys meeting new people.

While potential docents are required to a complete all 6-sessions (additional dates to be determined), the first two-hour session of the Stickley Seminar, set for Thursday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m., is recommended for anyone interested in volunteering at the Stickley Museum in any capacity. LSNWJ encourages the participation of private attorneys in the delivery of legal services to low-income people through its Volunteer Lawyer Program (VLP). The volunteer lawyer may designate the types of cases for which he or she is available to provide representation (in areas such as: 

Bankruptcy, consumer, foreclosure, domestic violence, divorce, custody support, guardianship, SSI disability, public entitlements, health, Employment/Unemployment, tenancy, tort-defense, wills, etc.).

LSNWJ screens the potential client for financial eligibility and type of case before making a referral. Filing fees are waived for VLP cases and LSNWJ maintains a budget for expert fees and other major litigation costs.

LSNWJ provides malpractice coverage as a supplement to the private attorney's coverage. Training and support are available. VLP attorneys who provide 25 or more hours of service annually are exempt from court assignments.

Good As New is a nonprofit resale shop located in downtown Somerville NJ benefiting the comprehensive programs at Zufall Health Center of Somerville (formerly Women's Health & Counseling Center). We are recruiting dedicated volunteers to contribute to its success. Volunteers are needed for Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.  Saturday volunteers are particularly needed.

Shop Manager – Bring your leadership and organizational skills to our retail venture.

Shop Co-Manager – Support the Manager in the daily operations of the shop and scheduling of volunteers.

What Do Tutors Do?

A tutor, working through Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County, works with an adult who wants to improve his facility in the use of English, and related skills.  This person might be U.S.-born or foreign born.  The tutoring is done on a confidential basis; no one else needs to be told that this tutoring is taking place.  The tutor and adult learner usually meet at a public place for about two hours once a week.

 The material covered in those sessions varies greatly from student to student, since it depends on the student’s objectives and his current level of English knowledge.  For instance, one objective for an American-born student at one time could be obtaining his driver’s license.  Once that was achieved, he might have a new objective of improved ability to understand written instructions on the job.   For someone born abroad, who had not previously studied English, the first objective probably would be the ability to carry on a basic conversation in English.

How can a tutor handle such varied tasks?  Every prospective tutor receives about 18 hours of training: three-hour sessions once a week for six weeks.  There is a library of training materials available for tutors.  There are people with experience who can assist when the best approach is not clear.  Most tutors are not teachers by profession.  The characteristics most essential to their success are flexibility—to adapt to the student’s level of understanding--- and desire to help the student.

Both the tutor and the student have work to do between lessons.  The tutor will spend several hours each week preparing for a lesson.  The student will be given “homework” –exercises or reading or some other task which will fix more permanently in his mind the concepts covered during the lesson.

All of this is a factual reply to the question, “What does a tutor do?”  Most tutors, if asked, would answer that question quite differently.  For instance:

            --I gave my student the ability to find a better job by helping him to get a

               driver license

            --I helped my student find a better job through his much-improved use of English

            --I made it possible for my (foreign-born) student to communicate with her children’s teachers

            --I helped my student become a U.S. citizen

Tutors are not paid in money. These results are their reward.  Most tutors find their work quite gratifying.
