Who We Are

The Adult Day Center was started in 1976 in a Bound Brook church basement.  It was one of the very first in New Jersey. Over the intervening quarter century, the Center has grown under the direction of founder Jeff Macaulay, whose vision has provided the opportunity for the frail elderly to live out their lives with dignity and independence. Thousands of individuals have been able to remain at home with their families and attend the Adult Day Center instead of being institutionalized.

Since July 2011, ADC has been located in its new state-of-the-art facility next to Somerset Patriots Stadium.  The new facility is allowing us to serve more older adults and their families than ever.  Previously limited to 65 individuals per day at our former location, we now serve more 70 members each day and more than 250 families per year.

The center is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Members are served breakfast and lunch that is provided by Somerset County Meals-on-Wheels.  Services include counseling, information and referral, nursing, nutritional consultation, personal care, pharmaceutical consultation, podiatry, physical, occupational and speech therapy and support groups.  Daily activities include art therapy, exercise, field trips and recreation. There are two nurses on site per day who oversee member’s well-being and administer prescriptions.

Our daily fee is $61 per day but this is subsidized significantly through fundraising and grants.  The fee is priced on a sliding-fee scale. This means that the cost is based upon one's ability to pay. We are proud to say that no Somerset County resident has been denied admission due to inability to pay. The difference between the maximum cost billed on behalf of members and the actual cost is covered by fund raising and grants. We are determined to keep costs as low as possible with no reduction in the quality of care.

Transportation to the Center can be provided by the Somerset County Office on Transportation.  Today more than 80% of our members take public transportation.

We offer a caregiver support group for our caregivers on the 2nd Saturday of each month.  Caregivers are served breakfast and lunch, hear an expert in the eldercare field and take part in a discussion.

The Adult Day Center is overseen by a Board of Trustees who set policy and assist in fundraising.  Our staff of 18 full time professionals comprises more than 200 years of experience in taking care of older adults with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or other special needs.

ADC serves all of Somerset County with a significant majority coming from Bridgewater, Franklin, Hillsborough, Manville and Bound Brook.

ADC’s new facility was funded through a combination of donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and government grants.  In order to complete the final phase of construction, ADC took a long term 30 year loan from Somerset County that is payable in five years.  Naming opportunities are still available.

12.6% of population of Somerset County is 65 and over (total population is 324,893).  2% of this population will be affected by Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

Adult Day Services allow an older adult to live at home with family and loved ones.   Families share in the care of loved ones, but have daily respite. Adult Day Services can delay or avoid expensive full-time institutional care by attending a center during the day, but otherwise living at home.
