Who We Are

Literacy New Jersey Sussex County Programs provides free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring to adults based on the individuals needs. Volunteer tutors are required to attend a 20 hour training course prior to being assigned to a student. The material covered in tutoring sessions varies greatly from student to student since it depends on the student's objectives and their current literacy level. For instance one objective for an American-born student could be obtaining his driver's license. Once that is achieved he might have a new objective of improving their ability to understand written instructions on the job. For someone born abroad who had not previously studied English the first objective "who has not previously studied English their first objective would be to learn how to carry on a basic conversation.

What We Do

The purpose of Literacy Volunteers of Sussex County is to promote and foster increased literacy in Sussex County and contiguous areas through free student-centered volunteer teaching and aid to low-literate and non - English speaking adults; to encourage and aid individuals groups or organizations desiring to increase literacy through voluntary programs.
